Email of the Day: Communicating with College Coaches

Most parents are uncomfortable trying to initiate recruiting communication with college coaches. Few do it well. Here’s a good example of an appropriate inquiry from parents and a well-written, honest, no BS response from a D1 coach. (If you’re curious, the coach responded in two days, which is more than appropriate.)   Dear Coach Smith, […]

Rome Before the Fall: Deion and College Sports

A recent USA Today article stated that Deion Sanders has found “his calling” as a college coach and leader of young men. God help us. This is a guy who has always been about himself first and whose previous involvement with education at Prime Prep was at best a disaster, at worst illegal. His hiring […]

Quote of the Day – Unreturned Phone Calls

“I have criminals who call me back but I can’t get prep school coaches to call me back.”     This from a client who works in law enforcement lamenting what is all too common and frustrating in today’s world in general.

Quote of the Day: “You’ve Ruined My Life”

You’ve ruined my life. Why did I have to be born in October?   This from a serious hockey player who thinks his late birthday puts him at a nearly insurmountable competitive disadvantage. As if his mom (an MD, no less) and dad should have anticipated this 16 years ago when (if?) they were family […]

Quote of the Day: Rome, Cam Newton and Humility

NFL quarterback Cam Newton announced recently, “I’m tired of being humble”. As this statement proves, there’s never been any danger of that. Newton is a microcosm of what’s wrong with sports (and society) today. If he’s what passes for humble, we’ve all got bigger issues. He wouldn’t know it if he tripped over it. This […]

Today’s Quiz: Student Loan Default Rates

True or False?  Student loan amounts of under $10,000 are more likely to be paid off than those over $10,000.       Answer:  False. Although it would seem that the lower amount would be easier to pay off, there are other factors involved. Here’s the link to the complete Washington Post article on student […]

Stat of the Day: Men’s Basketball Transfers

In the 2017-18 season, there were 5,537 athletes playing Division I men’s basketball — and 689 of them transferred. Of that number, 331 left for another Division I program. And there were only 32 request for waivers submitted.   Here’s link to full article by Andy Katz on ESPN. https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2018-12-05/college-basketball-transfers-what-you-need-know-about

Parent Blogs: Club Teams, Poaching and Communication

I think it’s important for families to be able to share and learn from the experiences of other families. This section of blogs gives parents the opportunity to share experiences that I think could be valuable to others. Examples like this one are used regularly in my workshops. They’re intended for discussion and study. If […]

Parent Blogs: Club Team Hipocracy

I think it’s important for families to be able to share and learn from the experiences of other families. This section of blogs gives parents the opportunity to share experiences that I think could be valuable to others. The email below is from the father of a 9th grade athlete to the coach of his […]
